Old White Bird Hill Grade
United States · Old Hwy 95
The original 1920s engineering marvel bypassing the Salmon River canyon. Climbs 2,900 vertical feet in 14 miles via stacked switchbacks clinging to open grass ridges without guardrails. Overlooks the 1877 Nez Perce battlefield with virtually zero traffic since modern US-95 was realigned through the gap.
Old White Bird Hill Grade runs 14 miles between White Bird, ID and Grangeville Summit, ID. We count about 115 corners along it, which is relentless. Demanding, and not a road to meet in the wet.
