Sierra de Durango High Pine Traverse - MEX 23

The undisputed overland motorcycle pilgrimage of North America, spanning the 1,000-mile length of the Baja Peninsula from the Pacific surf of Ensenada to the granite arches of Land's End at Cabo San Lucas. Traverses the cactus-studded Valle de los Cirios, the salt flats of Guerrero Negro (28th Parallel state line), the volcanic switchbacks of Cuesta del Infierno, and the turquoise waters of Bahía Concepción. Road Quality: Narrow two-lane asphalt with zero shoulders, irregular pavement patching, washboard edges, and sudden concrete vados (washes). Safety & Military Checkpoints: Multiple permanent SEDENA military and Guardia Nacional checkpoints (notably south of Ensenada, El Rosario, San Ignacio, and north of La Paz); stop smoothly, remove helmet and sunglasses, greet soldiers with 'Buenos días/tardes', and have vehicle registration ready. Strictly avoid night riding due to open-range black cattle (vacas negras) sleeping on warm asphalt and unlit farm trucks. Fuel Range: The critical fuel gap is between El Rosario and Cataviña / Villa Jesús María (approx. 200 miles); top off in El Rosario and carry auxiliary fuel or purchase emergency barrel gas (gasolina de tambo) from roadside vendors in Cataviña.

Passes famous postcard inlets including Playa Santispac, Playa El Reburio, Playa El Coyote, and Playa Buenaventura before sweeping inland over desert hills into the historic mission town of Loreto. Road Quality: Well-maintained two-lane asphalt with good grip, but blind turns around rock buttresses require lane discipline; watch for sand blown across coastal corners.
