Departs the turquoise Caribbean shores of Tulum, heading south past the seven-colored lagoon of Bacalar and Chetumal, then swinging west into the heart of the UNESCO Calakmul Biosphere Reserve—the largest tropical forest reserve in Mexico. Features long sweeping ribbons through dense jungle where spider monkeys, toucans, and ocelots cross the tarmac, terminating near the ancient Maya pyramids of Calakmul rising above the jungle canopy. Road Quality: Smooth, wide two-lane asphalt with good shoulders; watch for sudden tropical torrential downpours causing hydroplaning. Safety & Military Checkpoints: Military and INM immigration checkpoints near Felipe Carrillo Puerto, the Belize border crossing, and Xpujil; beware wildlife crossings at dawn and dusk. Fuel Range: Frequent Pemex stations in Tulum, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Bacalar, and Xpujil; the deep access road into the Calakmul archaeological site has zero services, so fill up in Xpujil.
