Gonzaga Bay Coastal Highway - MEX 5
Formerly a brutal off-road washboard trail, MEX 5 is now fully paved with smooth tarmac hugging the desolate eastern coastline of Baja along the Sea of Cortez. Connects San Felipe past the tidal sulfur hot springs of Puertecitos, the turquoise crescent cove of Bahía San Luis Gonzaga (Alfonsina's), and cuts southwest through the inland volcanic plateau to connect with MEX 1 at Laguna Chapala. Road Quality: Pristine modern asphalt, but watch for drifting sand dunes blowing across blind corners and dip-washes (vados) carrying loose gravel. Safety & Military Checkpoints: Military checkpoint just south of San Felipe and roving patrols near Gonzaga Bay; extremely remote desert corridor with zero cell service for over 80 miles. Carry basic satellite communication (Garmin inReach). Fuel Range: Pemex in San Felipe, a modern Pemex station at Bahía San Luis Gonzaga (Rancho Grande), and private barrel fuel at the Laguna Chapala junction. Ensure 130-mile safe range.
