Road Quality: Narrow two-lane asphalt with zero shoulders, irregular pavement patching, washboard edges, and sudden concrete vados (washes). Safety & Military Checkpoints: Multiple permanent SEDENA military and Guardia Nacional checkpoints (notably south of Ensenada, El Rosario, San Ignacio, and north of La Paz); stop smoothly, remove helmet and sunglasses, greet soldiers with 'Buenos días/tardes', and have vehicle registration ready. Strictly avoid night riding due to open-range black cattle (vacas negras) sleeping on warm asphalt and unlit farm trucks. Fuel Range: The critical fuel gap is between El Rosario and Cataviña / Villa Jesús María (approx. 200 miles); top off in El Rosario and carry auxiliary fuel or purchase emergency barrel gas (gasolina de tambo) from roadside vendors in Cataviña.
