Traverses the cactus-studded Valle de los Cirios, the salt flats of Guerrero Negro (28th Parallel state line), the volcanic switchbacks of Cuesta del Infierno, and the turquoise waters of Bahía Concepción. Road Quality: Narrow two-lane asphalt with zero shoulders, irregular pavement patching, washboard edges, and sudden concrete vados (washes). Safety & Military Checkpoints: Multiple permanent SEDENA military and Guardia Nacional checkpoints (notably south of Ensenada, El Rosario, San Ignacio, and north of La Paz); stop smoothly, remove helmet and sunglasses, greet soldiers with 'Buenos días/tardes', and have vehicle registration ready. Strictly avoid night riding due to open-range black cattle (vacas negras) sleeping on warm asphalt and unlit farm trucks. Fuel Range: The critical fuel gap is between El Rosario and Cataviña / Villa Jesús María (approx. 200 miles); top off in El Rosario and carry auxiliary fuel or purchase emergency barrel gas (gasolina de tambo) from roadside vendors in Cataviña.
