Declared the best road in the world by Top Gear. Constructed in the 1970s as a military strategic route through the Făgăraș Mountains across the Southern Carpathians. Features five unlit tunnels, massive concrete avalanche sheds, and an astounding northern descent into Transylvania with dozens of stacked hairpin bends and concrete viaducts. Summits at Bâlea Lake (2,042m). Romanian road vignette (Rovinieta, ~€3) required. Strictly seasonal: closed late October to late June/early July due to heavy snow.
